“Red Flag Warning”: Swimmers Warned of Dangerous Rip Currents at Galveston Beaches

GALVESTON – Galveston Beach Patrol has issued a red flag warning for Labor Day, as the water becomes rougher due to strong winds and currents. A red flag is a signal of potentially dangerous conditions, and swimmers are advised to stay near lifeguard towers and avoid areas with strong currents, such as near piers and jetties.

Chief Peter Davis of the Beach Patrol said, “We are encouraging people to stay away from any kind of pier or jetty or anything like that because their rip currents will be a lot stronger, more prevalent there, and definitely swim near a Lifeguard.”

Rip currents are powerful currents that can quickly pull swimmers away from shore. They can occur anywhere, but they are especially common in areas with breaking waves. If you are caught in a rip current, the most important thing to do is to stay calm and don’t panic. Try to swim parallel to the shore until you escape the current. If you cannot swim, float on your back and signal for help.

There are 32 lifeguard towers in effect on the Galveston beaches for the holiday, so help is always nearby. However, it is important to be aware of the risks and take precautions to stay safe.
