Ruschell Boone, Beloved NY1 Presenter, Dies After 2-Year Battle with Pancreatic Cancer
Ruschell Boone, a beloved news anchor and reporter for NY1, died on Tuesday after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 48.
Boone was born in Jamaica in 1975 and began her career in journalism at CNNfn, where she served as an assignment editor. She joined NY1 in 2007 and quickly became a familiar face to New Yorkers, reporting on a wide range of stories, from breaking news to community events.
Boone was a two-time Emmy Award winner and was known for her dedication to her work and her commitment to telling the stories of New Yorkers. She was also a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion in the media.
“Ruschell was a dedicated and principled journalist to the very end,” said NY1 President Michael J. Olesker. “In her last week with us, she was still working on ideas for her show and sharing thoughts for making NY1 a continued beacon of truth for New Yorkers.”
Boone’s death was met with sadness and tributes from her colleagues, friends, and viewers. City Councilman Robert Holden, a Queens Democrat, said on social media that Boone was “one of the greatest reporters New York ever had.” Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, a Queens Democrat, wrote that the newswoman was a “representation of our city’s beauty.”
And Mayor Eric Adams said he was heartbroken, describing Boone as “the heart and soul of the greatest city on the globe.”
Ruschell Boone was a talented journalist and a dedicated public servant. Her death is a loss for New York City and for the entire news industry. She will be deeply missed.
In addition to her work as a journalist, Boone was also a wife, mother, and daughter. She is survived by her husband, Todd, her two children, and her mother.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
