Drew Barrymore is facing backlash after her talk show returned to production during the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike. The move is controversial because most other network talk shows have remained dark during the strike.
Barrymore has defended her decision, saying that she wants to provide a platform for writers to share their stories. However, some WGA members are calling her a “scab” for crossing the picket line.
On Monday, WGA members picketed the CBS Broadcast Center in Manhattan, where Barrymore’s show is filmed. The picket line is set to continue on Tuesday and September 19-21.
In an Instagram post, Barrymore explained her decision to return to production. She said that she made the choice to walk away from the MTV Movie & TV Awards in May in solidarity with the strike, but that she is now making the choice to come back for her own show.
“I own this choice,” she wrote. “We are in compliance with not discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind.”
Barrymore’s decision has been met with mixed reactions. Some fans have supported her, while others have criticized her for crossing the picket line.
The WGA strike began on May 10 and is over a number of issues, including pay equity, healthcare, and residuals. The union has said that it will not end the strike until its demands are met.
It remains to be seen how long Barrymore’s show will be able to continue production during the strike. The WGA has said that it will not hesitate to picket shows that are using non-union writers.
