Veteran Republican strategist Mike Murphy said on Wednesday night that the far-right of his party is making a big mistake by focusing on impeachment inquiries for President Joe Biden.
Murphy appeared on MSNBC’s The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle on Wednesday, and said that the impeachment focus is a “weak” political strategy, especially given the current economic climate.
“You can love Joe Biden or you can dislike him,” Murphy said. “But the political strategy right now is quite weak, especially on the economy. So, to the extent that the Republicans help the Democrats by throwing a big smoke bomb over, hey, let’s talk about Trump, and crazy impeachment schemes and things like that, they are losing the opportunity to prosecute President Biden over his performance on the economy.”
Murphy added that the impeachment focus is also bad for the Republican Party’s long-term interests.
“So, politically, it’s an incredibly stupid idea,” he said. “But we suffer in my beloved GOP from kind of the banana republic wing. Many of them are elected, particularly in the House, and they are a minority of them that have been direct mail fundraising operations to feed, and kind of this echo chamber and stuff, can hardly wait to do something like that, because it is in their narrow interests. It’s not in the Republican party’s interests if they want to not get wiped out next year and November.”
Murphy’s comments come as some Republicans are calling for impeachment inquiries into Biden’s handling of the withdrawal from Afghanistan and his son Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine. However, Murphy argued that these inquiries are not only politically unpopular but also counterproductive.
“The American people are tired of this,” he said. “They want us to focus on the economy, they want us to focus on getting things done.”
It remains to be seen whether the Republican Party will heed Murphy’s advice. However, his comments are a sign that some within the party are concerned about the political fallout from the impeachment focus.
