Andrew Weissmann, the former lead prosecutor for Robert Mueller’s special counsel team, said that if the leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers are getting 15 to 22 years in prison, then Donald Trump, the leader of the conspiracy, is likely to get the same sentence.
Weissmann made this statement after former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio was sentenced to 22 years in prison. Tarrio was not present at the Capitol on January 6, but he was convicted of seditious conspiracy for his role in planning the attack.
Weissmann said that Tarrio’s sentence shows that it is possible to be convicted of seditious conspiracy even if you were not physically present at the Capitol. He also said that the pressure on judges to give Trump a harsh sentence will be great, because many people have already been convicted for their role in the January 6 attack.
Weissmann acknowledged that Trump is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but he said that the signs are pointing to a conviction. He also said that he believes that Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is presiding over the case against Trump, will not hesitate to give him a harsh sentence if he is convicted.
Weissmann believes that Trump is likely to face a long prison sentence if he is convicted of seditious conspiracy.
